SONIA ASKS PM TO CONTAIN FOOD PRICES
By R Rajagopalan
NEW DELHI: Congress President Sonia Gandhi has asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to curb the increasing rise in prices of the essential commodities, pointing out the rising public anger over the government's failure on this front.
"Price rise o essential commodities continues to be a matter of the highest concern to us," she writes in the latest issue of the party's mouthpiece 'Congress Sandesh.'
"I have personally spoken to the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister (Pranab Mukherjee) on the issue and they have assured me that the government would take very possible step to address the issue," she added.
She has, however, not put all the blame on the Manmohan Singh government for the price rise as she writes that the situation has been exacerbated by the failure of the monsoon in various parts of the country. She also exhorted the state governments to ensure that essential commodities are made available to the people at reasonable prices.

CONG READY TO BITE TELENGANA CARD
From Our Bureau
NEW DELHI: The Congress was engaged Saturday night in devising a political strategy to capitalise on the separate Telengana state issue rocking Andhra Pradesh whole of the week and defuse the heat on the party's government in the state.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi is understood to have spoken to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for revival of the Pranab Mukherjee Committee on Telengana that was constituted during UPA-I government but then abandoned. Revival of the committee may be announced on Monday to soothen the tense feelings in Andhra Pradesh.
Home Minister P Chidambaram and National Security Adviser M K Narayanan were keeping an eye on developments in Hyderabad. A clearcut approach on the Telengana issue is likely to be evolved on Sunday when Sonia and Manmohan Singh meet to study the inputs of Chidambaram and Narayanan, a top Congress source said. Also summoned to Delhi on Sunday is PCC chief D Srinivas to be available for consultations.
The prime concern of the Congress is to bring peace in Andhra Pradesh, particularly because the current agitation may otherwise cast its shadow on the Andhra Pradesh Assembly beginning its session on Monday.
The Congress is also contemplating to ask its MPs to raise the Telengana issue in both the Houses of Parliament on Monday to snatch away the initiative from the hands of the opposition parties.
On Saturday, Jagan Reddy, the Congress MP and son of Chief Y S R Reddy, as also former union minister P Shiv Shankar had meetings with Law Minister M Veerappa Moily, the incharge of the Congress affairs in Andhra Pradesh.
Meanwhile, Home Secretary G K Pillai and Intelligence Bureau chief Rajiv Mathur reviewed the law and order situation in the state on the basis of the inputs from the state police chief and IB official in Hyderabad. The Home Secretary also rang up the Chief Secretary.

PMO, happy times are back again for some. SM Krishna is the Shivraj Patil of the
UPA II government which makes the national security advisor, MK Narayanan,
dominate decision-making in the foreign ministry. With Krishna unwilling to exercise
his authority and the new foreign secretary, Nirupama Rao, too demure to protest,
Narayanan is alleged to have got busy poaching on core MEA territory. Narayanan,
apparently, takes the top billing in negotiations related to the PM’s foreign visits,
forging ahead of both the foreign minister and the foreign secretary in matters
related to foreign policy. Some men, they say, never learn.

Springing a surprise on close party colleagues, octogenarian chief minister and DMK president M Karunanidhi on virtually announced that he would retire from active electoral politics and administration by the middle of next year to dedicate himself to the welfare of the downtrodden.
He said he had fulfilled almost all his ideals and what remained was to see the completion of the new secretariat complex and a world class library in Chennai and hold a world classical Tamil conference in June 2010.
“After all this, I will dedicate the rest of my life to the welfare of the people, brushing aside the trappings of power and politics,” he said at a thanks-giving meet organised by the Arunthathiar community for introducing a sub-quota for it within the Scheduled Castes.

Jagan Moily secret conclave about AP politics
What Jagan Reddy Veerappa Moily
secretly discusssed on
Andhra Congress politics
in Central Hall?
By R Rajagopalan
Union Minister Veerappa Moily and Jagan Reddy MP today
intimately talked - for more than half an hour in Central Hall of Parliament
in the glare of many MPs and Ministers.
Many Andhra Congress MPs were not keen to go to that particular
bench where Moily Reddy were 'whispering"
This was a scene fo Jagan Reddy and Moily
was a treat for TDP MPs who cut jokes with boisterou
laughter said that 'kuch kuch hotahai"
One lady Andhra Minister said namaste to Veerappa Moily, the talk
with jagan reddy was so serious that Moily did not even acknowledge
the greetings from lady minister from AP.
Two Andhra MPs Vundavalli Aruna Kumar and Hari Sabbam both MPs were seen standing
behind the bench where Jagan Reddy and Veerappa Moily were seated.
Nowadays some Andhra MPs have begun to distance from one particular
group say jagan camp, are now migrating towards Keshav Rao and D Srinivas
camps. Complete division is seen amongst the Andhra Congress MPs
and that could be felt by seeing their different stances and approaches.
