UNUSUAL MEETING OF CBI DIRECTOR WITH BJP LEADERS ON P CHIDAMBARAM
BJP LEADERS LODGE COMPLAINT TO CBI AGAINST P CHIDAMBARAM ON 2G

In an unusual move, CBI Director A P Singh today had a meeting with a BJP delegation which demanded a probe into alleged role of the then Finance Minister P Chidambaram in the 2G scam.
It is not a normal practice that the CBI Director meets members of political parties but today he gave time to the five-member delegation led by party MP Prakash Javdekar.
Javdekar, accompanied with fellow MPs Maya Singh, Shivakumar Udasi and BJP office bearers Bhupendra Yadav and Jagat Prasad Nadda, presented to him records received through RTI replies and other evidences which allegedly indicate that Chidambaram had sanctioned the policy for sale of spectrum.
The delegation also demanded that the CBI should quantify the entire loss caused through the telecom spectrum allocation scam which CAG has put to be at around Rs 1.76 lakh crore.
A Raja, the then Telcommunications Minister, is in jail and has been formally chargesheeted for conspiracy behind the loot and corruption of thousands of crore in the award of 2G licence and allocation of precious spectrum.
However, it seems surprising that the CBI for reasons unknown has not investigated the role of P Chidambaram who was the then Finance Minister, the delegation said in it representation.
When asked whether they will approach the Supreme Court, Javdekar told reporters that they will see the action taken by the CBI on their representation and then take a call on future course of action.
The BJP said the Cabinet, in 2003, had decided that Finance Ministry and Telecom Ministry would settle pricing and allocation of spectrum and both the ministries are equally responsible for any decision taken.

NEW DELHI: Yuva Morcha President and BJP MP Anurag Thakur on Thursday slammed Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi for an uncharitable, reckless and shocking remark on the Mumbai terror attacks that "it is very difficult to stop every single terrorist attacks."
"You have no right to be in the Government if you think like a coward," Thakur averred asserting that it was the soft appeasement policies of the UPA government which has put the country at the mercy of terrorists.
Calling him a politician with least connect with people and their concerns, he said Rahul Gandhi is suffering from "verbal diarrhea." In a statement, Thakur said he shares the dismay of the common people of Mumbai at the inability of the Centre and state government to prevent repeated attacks on their city.
"This type of behaviour (of Rahul Gandhi) is completely unwarranted. If the so called icon makes such irresponsible comments, what effect will it have on the youth of our country," Thakur asked.

NEW DELHI: Senior Bhartiya Janata Party leader Arun Jaitley on Thursday slammed the Congress for its vote bank politics plunging the country in increasing terror attacks.
"Yesterday's Mumbai attacks remind us that India is still on target of the terror elements. After the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, the UPA government had made tall claims for the country's security but no concrete steps have been taken yet," he told a gathering of the local BJP activists.
The National Counter Terrorism Centre promised after the 26/11 has not been set up even after three years, he pointed out and chided Home Minister P Chidambaram taking satisfaction that the attacks on Mumbai after 31 months.
He referred to repeated pointer by BJP patriarch Lal Krishna Advani that there has been no terror attacks in the United States after 9/11. "It is because the US government took such concrete steps that such terrorist attacks never occurred again," he said.
Jaitley also blasted the government for engaging in talks with Pakistan even after the fact that the neighbour country has not taken any action against terror elements operating from its soil. "Pakistan claims to be a part of global war against terrorism,

BJP OPPOSES FDI IN MULTI-BRAND RETAIL

NEW DELHI: With interests of the small traders who form the bulk of its vote bank uppermost in mind, the Bhartiya Janata Party has refused to buy a government proposal to allow the foreign players enter the Indian market with the multi-brand retail.
The government is contemplating a Bill in the upcoming Parliament session for the purpose, believing that FDI (foreign direct investment) in retail would help bring down prices in the long run.
Rajya Sabha Opposition leader Arun Jaitley, however, says his party is opposed to the FDI (foreign direct investment) for two reasons: "First, it will kill the self-employment opportunities that are the single largest creator of jobs and second, it will hit the Indian manufacturing sector leading to more job losses."
The Centre had approached the BJP, the main opposition party, for its support to a the proposed Bill to allow foreigners set up the multi-brand retail shops in India. The Left is opposed to FDI in this sector and hence the government will find difficulty to push through the measure after the BJP putting down its foot.
Jaitley said the government should give a rethink to find out if the Indian economy was in a state to allow FDI in such a key sector at this point of time.
The multinationals may not be able to set up shops in metro cities because of the high real estate prices and so they would venture into smaller cities, thereby squeezing self-employment opportunities and dealing death blows to small shopkeepers, Jaitley said.
He warned that with strong global network, the multinationals are bound to source their products at the cheapest rate from across the world and this would impact demand of the Indian manufacturing sector.
Moreover, Jaitley, who held the commerce portfolio among others during the BJP-led NDA government, said the government is mistaken that the consumer will benefit with cheaper products and multiple choices. He asserted that the government is wrong in assuming that FDI in retail would help bring down prices in the long run.
He said the agenda of the multinationals would be to buy cheap and sell at higher prices after eliminating competition from market by initially offering products at discount compared to the market rate.
Jaitley threw the spanner on behalf of the Bill at a time when the Cabinet was all set to take a policy decision. The Committee of Secretaries (CoS) headed by new Cabinet Secretary Ajit Kumar Seth is slated to meet here on July 22 to prepare a blueprint on FDI in multi-brand retail and resolve the inter-ministerial differences on issues like the regulatory mechanism and capping on the foreign investment.
There is not much difference in the stand taken by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion and the Department of Consumer Affairs on the cap to the FDI in this sector. The first wants to allow FDI up to 51 per cent while the latter wants it to benot more than 49 per cent.
