ASHWANI KUMAR CONGRESS MP IS THE
CHAIRMAN OF SELECT COMMITTEE
FOR PREVENTION OF TORTURE BILL

Hon’ble Chairman, Rajya Sabha and Vice President of India Shri
Mohammad Hamid Ansari has appointed Shri Ashwani Kumar, MP (Rajya
Sabha) as Chairman of the Select Committee of Rajya Sabha on ‘The
Prevention and Torture Bill, 2010’. The proposed law seeks to ensure
the elimination of torture inflicted by public servants or any other
person with the consent or acquiescence of a public servant. The
Bill seeks to facilitate ratification by India of the UN Convention
Against Torture and other cruel, inhuman and Degrading Treatment or
Punishment of any individual. The critical importance of enacting such
a law can be traced to the necessity of protecting the dignity and
human rights of all citizens and to align India’s legal regime with
the principles recognized in the aforesaid UN Convention. Members of
the Committee nominated pursuant to a Motion moved by the Home
Minister in the Rajya Sabha on 31.8.2010, are the following senior
