MUMBAI DABBAWALA ON MAHARASHTRA TABLEAU

From Our Delhi Bureau

NEW DELHI: Mumbai's "dabbawalas" who ferry lakhs of lunch tiffin boxes
every day gets pride of place on the Maharashtra tableau for
presentation in the Republic Day Parade here.

The precision they display in the error-free collection of the lunch
boxes from homes and their delivery to Mumbaikars in their offices was
on display in the full dress rehearsal of the parade on Saturday.

The Indian Navy tableau on the other hand displays how it dealt with
the pirates in the Glf of Aden, with display of a dummy helicopter and
the Somalian pirates surrendering before the marine commandos.

An added attraction in the navy tableau is display of Shivalik class
ship that is proposed to be inducted in the Navy in March to boost its
surface fleet.

The Goa Government has chosen to use the theme of the International
Film Festival of India (IFFI) it holds every year in November that
used to be once Delhi's monopoly.

Tripura has chosen rather an unusual theme never tried in the R-Day
parades: Playing the "Sun mere bandhu re" song of legendary singer and
composer late Sachin Day Burman all along the 10-km long route. Burman
belonged to a royal family of Tripura but left his inheritance and
moved to Mumbai when family opposed his marriage to Meera Dasgupta not
hailing the royalty.
