BALAKRISHNAN TO BE NHRC CHAIRMAN
From Our Delhi Bureau
NEW DELHI: Despite the Delhi High Court's snub for keeping the
National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) headless since last June after
retirement of Justice (retd) S Rajendra Babu, the government is in no
hurry to fill up the post.
Top sources said the post will remain vacant for another five months
as the government has zeroed on Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan to head
the NHRC after retirement in May when he completes 65 years of age.
Only a retired Chief Justice of India can be made the NHRC chairman
and the government was not willing to pick of either of the two
available retired CJIs.
Since after Rajendra Babu's retirement, Justice G P Mathur, a retired
Supreme Court judge and member of NHRC, is running the show as its
acting chairman.
