SONIA ASKS PM TO CONTAIN FOOD PRICES
By R Rajagopalan

NEW DELHI: Congress President Sonia Gandhi has asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to curb the increasing rise in prices of the essential commodities, pointing out the rising public anger over the government's failure on this front.

"Price rise o essential commodities continues to be a matter of the highest concern to us," she writes in the latest issue of the party's mouthpiece 'Congress Sandesh.'

"I have personally spoken to the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister (Pranab Mukherjee) on the issue and they have assured me that the government would take very possible step to address the issue," she added.

She has, however, not put all the blame on the Manmohan Singh government for the price rise as she writes that the situation has been exacerbated by the failure of the monsoon in various parts of the country. She also exhorted the state governments to ensure that essential commodities are made available to the people at reasonable prices.
